Shyam Benegal was born on 14 December 1934. He is a prolific filmmaker and screenwriter. He made a mark in the history of Indian filmmaking with introducing the genre of New age alternate Cinema. His notable films are Ankur(1973), Manthan (1976), Nishant(1975), Bhumika(1977) and many more. He won many prestigious awards throughout his career including Padma Shri in 1976. He went on to win Padma Bhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke Award inthe year 1991 and 2005 respectively. He also won National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi for seven times! His recent films include Welcome to Sajjanpur(2008) and slated to direct a biopic on Sheikh Mujibar Rehman.
